Goblet with a long, fluted cup on a richly decorated stem in uncoloured glass.

During the 17th century, Venice was the main producer of glass in Europe, with a production characterised by sophisticated techniques and intricate ornamentation. Glass made in this fashion but produced outside Venice is therefore mostly referred to as being made in the façon de Venise. This goblet is of a type that was much appreciated in the Netherlands and Flanders. In his grand tour guidebook 'The Voyage of Italy, or a Compleat Journey through Italy' (1670), Richard Lassels describes how glass of this particular type was produced in Venice specifically for sale on the Dutch market.
